Significant Growth in North America Offset By Declines In Other Regions
Incline Village, NV. May 20, 2025 — In a newly released report, 650 Group highlights that the Mobile Radio Access Network (RAN) infrastructure market experienced a slight decline in Q1 2025 compared to year-ago revenues, stabilizing after two years of significant downturns. However, the market experienced significant double-digit year-over-year declines in the previous two years.
The top five vendors in 1Q25 included Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, ZTE and Samsung. These five vendors represent the vast majority of RAN revenues. Regionally, North America experienced significant double-digit year-over-year growth while most other regions experienced declines on the same basis.
“While 1Q’25 RAN results represented a hiatus from the downtrends of the prior two years, there are still headwinds in the RAN market to contend with,” said Chris DePuy, founding analyst for 650 Group. “Since we are in the latter half of the typical ten-year upgrade cycle represented by 5G, we anticipate continued declines in future periods until 6G-related spending commences.”
“Looking ahead, as 6G capital spending begins, the terrestrial RAN market—traditional land-based cellular networks—will face pressure as Direct-to-Cell (D2C) satellite services, which connect directly to mobile devices without ground infrastructure, compete for rural coverage,” continued DePuy. “Satellite broadband, the subject of another report published by 650 Group, is expected to experience significant growth, and through satellite sharing, will lead to D2C capabilities that will offer rural cellular coverage that, today, is provided by earth-based RAN systems.”
