Google’s Planned Acquisition of Wiz Has The Potential to Change the Security Industry

Today, Google announced plans to acquire Wiz, Inc. for $32B in cash. Of course, the deal is subject to “customary closing conditions including regulatory approvals.” Google said that Wiz’s products will continue to work and will be available across all major clouds, including AWS, Azure, and Oracle Cloud. It also said that Wiz and Google Cloud will be “better together” by “securing cloud-native applications at every stage of development..” Wiz has seen a doubling of annualized revenues in the past year, according to various reports, suggesting it has achieved significant success with customers. Last year, Wiz said no to an acquisition offer from Google; today, it said yes. Also, in 2024, Wiz planned to and then didn’t acquire Lacework. Wiz’s customers, no doubt, are accustomed to Wiz being involved in M&A.

Significant acquisitions such as this often take a while to close, and once and if closed, it often leads to a change in plans. You could see how customers might wonder whether Wiz’s products will continue to work with non-Google Cloud or what it means that Wiz and Google Cloud will be “better together.” If Google and Wiz manage to quell product support uncertainty concerns in the near term and succeed in their continued support across major clouds in the long term, then this planned acquisition could significantly impact the security industry.
